Measuring Human Speed
A Scientific Investigation
Lab Experiment #1
Conducted by DJ Hadoken
(with: Unknowing Impostor, Mistaken Identity and
DJ Fuji the Man Scout)
Objective:
To measure the speed of a human while walking.
Materials:
A. Watch
B. Meterstick
C. Wooden stick
D. Human
Procedures:
1. Select a distance to be traveled throughout the experiment. This distance should remain constant.
2. Have the human walk this distance and note the time in which it takes them to cover this distance. Record the results.
3. Repeat two more times and calculate to find the speed.
Results:
Conclusion:
The distance was a constant of 8 meters. The average speed (velocity) of the human was 1.6 m/s. A margin of error exists because on the third trial, the human walked slightly slower than on the first two trials, at an average speed of 1.1 m/s.
Lab Experiment #2
Conducted by DJ Skittles
(with: Witty Witch and The Minstrel)
Objective:
Measure human speed.
Materials:
A. Stopwatch
B. Meterstick
C. Wooden stick
D. Human
E. Pens
Procedures:
1. Select a distance to be traveled throughout the experiment. This distance should be constant.
2. Have the human walk this distance and record the time in which it takes them to cover this distance. Place the pens down to represent each second. Measure the distance from where the human started to each second. Record the results.
3. Repeat steps 1-3, three or four times. Then record the results.
Results:
Conclusion:
The distance was a constant of 7 meters. The average speed (velocity) of the human was 1.19 m/s. The human walked fast in the first few steps and then decreased speed around the last few steps. In the first and third trials, the human’s acceleration was constant. In the second trial, the human was slower.
