Gangs of New York (2002) Review

Leonardo DiCaprio, Cameron Diaz, and Daniel Day-Lewis on the Gangs of New York movie poster.

DJ Benvenuto the Raccoon has this to say:

Moving on... we arrive at Gangs of New York. The real stinker of the bunch. I hated it.

The only salvaging aspect of the movie was probably Daniel Day-Lewis. His character was quite entertaining. Even through the cheesy mustache, cocky swagger, and that accent Lewis puts on a great performance.

The movie itself was “pretty” in terms of scenery and camera work. But even that still didn’t salvage it. An hour into it I was quite bored and I still had nearly 2 more hours to go.

The opening fight scene just tries too hard. They’re fighting man to man, knife to knife. Fast cuts and techno music seems a little much. I was waiting for the Bullet Time to kick in, but luckily that never came.

It ends in a bang. But even that isn’t enough to save it. The movie tries too hard to be something that it is not. It tries to be meaningful, symbolic and dare I say it... entertaining....

It falls short of its goal though.

Don’t bother with this one.
